ll of the objects featured here were manufactured at the St. Petersburg
Glassworks, later renamed the Imperial Glass Factory. It is somewhat
difficult to trace the history of this manufactory. It is known
that the factory at one time belonged to Aleksandr Menshikov, Peter
the Greats favorite and the governor of St. Petersburg. When
Menshikov fell out of favor, the glassworks became state property.
The government, however, showed little interest in operating such
a factory, and in 1730 it was leased to William Elmzel. After his
death, the factory changed hands several times until 1792, when
it once again became state property and was renamed the Imperial
Glass Factory.
