Professional Theatre Internship Program for University of Chicago Students:
Sponsored by the U of C Women's Board and The Metcalf program.

Applications for Spring Quarter internships are due by 9 AM on Monday, February 5, 2007.

Note: If you are a student at another Chicago college or university and are interested in interning at Court Theatre, please call Intern Coordinator Jack Tamburri to discuss possibilities, but know that if an opportunity is available, you will likely not be paid.

INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES:
In return for the commitment we have made as professional theatre artists and administrators to develop a formalized professional internship program, we expect each U of C student will bring to their internship a willingness to learn and a desire to contribute to Court Theatre's artistry and goals. All internships will offer practical experience as well as an opportunity to attend select rehearsals, performances, production, staff and Board committee meetings, as well as special events. Student interns will be expected to organize their time well, communicate efficiently and appropriately with others, respond to the timely requests of their supervisors, and present themselves in a professional and focused manner at all Court activities.

COMPENSATION:
Due to the support of the Women's Board of the University of Chicago and the Jeff Metcalf Fellowship Foundation, Court Theatre is able to provide U of C student interns a stipend of $1,000 for their work.

DURATION AND COMMITMENT:
Administrative internships are available for the eleven weeks of Spring Quarter. Production internships are available from first rehearsal (April 7) through opening night (May 12) of Arcadia. Individual intern schedules will be determined in accordance with academic responsibilities.

INTERSHIP DESCRIPTIONS

Marketing & Communications:
The Marketing & Communications Intern will work in all areas of sales and promotions including audience development, subscription and single ticket sales campaigns, press, publications and group sales. This internship requires strong written and verbal communications skills, as well as organizational skills. Interns may also assist with research projects, direct mail and special events. This position is open to all University of Chicago students.

Development:
The Development Intern will assist Court Theatre's Development Department on various projects such as our annual direct mail and telephone fundraising campaigns, proposals to corporations and foundations, and special events, including board meetings and opening nights. This is an exciting opportunity to learn the basics about fundraising for a non-profit arts organization. Thisposition is open to all University of Chicago students.

Special Events:
The Special Events Intern will help coordinate Court Theatre's annual Gala in May 2007. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, maintaining event contacts, guest lists and various databases, acquiring and tracking auction items, developing written auctionmaterials, managing the online auction, recruiting volunteers, organizing historical and current information and pre- and post-event correspondence with donors. This position requires strong communication, organizational and computing skills. Candidates should be enthusiastic and ready to work in a fast-paced environment. This position is open to all University of Chicago students. Intern must be available during day and evening hours on Friday, May 18, 2007.

Directing, Arcadia:
The Directing Intern will assist Artistic Director Charles Newell as he conceptualizes, leads and rehearses the Court mainstage production of Stoppard's Arcadia. The directing intern is required to attend a significant number of rehearsal hours while the show is in the rehearsal hall and then move with the company into technical rehearsals in the theater. Finally, the intern will take notes and generally assist the director during the week and a half of preview performances prior to the opening. The Directing Intern might also have the opportunity to work on research and dramaturgy for the production and is expected to attend production meetings and technical rehearsals. Previous experience in directing and related coursework is required. This position is open to third and fourth year students only, and is not recommended for students taking a full course load during Spring quarter. Stage Management, Arcadia:
The Stage Management Intern reports to and works closely with the Court Theatre Stage Manager Ellen Hay and Assistant Stage Manager William Collins through the rehearsal process of Arcadia. The intern is expected to help with: setting up the rehearsal room at the beginning of the day, tracking and setting props, running lines with actors, taking line notes, paperwork, organization, and other useful projects that become necessary during the rehearsal process. Interns have the opportunity to observe and take part in many facets of professional theatre production, including sitting in on production meetings, observing and helping with technical rehearsals, performing backstage duties, and observing the calling of the shows. Previous experience in theatre production is required. This internship is open to third and fourth year students only. Light Design, Arcadia:
The Light Design Intern will work with the Designer to craft and build the light plot and effects for Court's production of Tom Stoppard's Arcadia. Intern will attend pre-production design meetings, rehearsals, light hangs, and preview performances and production meetings. Prior experience drafting light plots and working with theatrical lighting instruments required. Significant hours during tech period (approx. April 16 - May 3) are required, so this internship is not recommended for students taking a full course load during Spring quarter. Pre-production begins Winter quarter, but most hours will be fulfilled in the Spring. This position is open to third and fourth year University of Chicago students. Directing, Fall Production:
The Directing Intern will assist a Court Theatre director in the rehearsal of a to-be-named production. The term of the internship will be from first rehearsal (on or about 8/20/07) through Opening Night (on or about 9/29/07). The Directing Intern is required to attend a significant number of rehearsal hours while the show is in the rehearsal hall and then move with the company into technical rehearsals in the theater. The intern will take notes and generally assist the director during the week and a half of preview performances prior to opening. The Directing Intern might also have the opportunity to work on research and dramaturgy for the production and is expected to attend production meetings and technical rehearsals. Previous experience in directing and related coursework is required. This position is open to rising third and fourth year students only.
